Nigeria: Salini Costruttori awarded the contract for the Abuja highway
23 Feb 2010
Salini Nigeria, a subsidiary of Salini Costruttori, has won the contract for extension of a section of highway, the Southern Expressway (ISEX), to Abuja, capital of Nigeria. The locally funded project calls for a total investment of approximately 63 million Euros. The section, which will be completed over a period of 24 months, will extend more than 3 km into the city. The entire highway infrastructure, which is very significant for the city, will allow connections with industrial complexes that are currently isolated, and other satellite centres not connected to the capital. It is part of a broader pool of projects that Salini Costruttori is carrying out in Nigeria, through its subsidiary Salini Nigeria, for a total of some 1,200 million Euros, including:
• construction of a monumental, multifunctional architectural complex called Cultural Centre and Millennium Tower, in downtown Abuja;
• urban-development work in the new industrial area of Idu, on the outskirts of Abuja;
• construction of the multiuse Gurara dam which, in addition to supplying water to the city of Abuja for the next 50 years, will contribute through its hydroelectric station to producing power for the city of Kaduna and will provide irrigation for more than 2,000 hectares for agricultural development.
The firm has also donated a park to the city of Abuja, the Millennium Park, which today is a place where city folk can meet and relax.
