Salini awarded modernisation work for Al Kufra Airport
18 May 2010
Salini will be modernising the runway, parallel lanes and parking areas and the lighting for the Libyan airport of Al Kufra. The works, totalling 97.5 million dinars (57.5 million Euros), were awarded to Salini by decision of the General People’s Committee for Industry, Economy and Trade.“Once again a major job for the modernisation of Africa’s infrastructure,” declared Managing Director Pietro Salini, “that demonstrates the strategic value of our presence on the Continent.” And further proof of Italy’s ability to compete internationally when the technical and business choices are in line with market demands.”
The Kufra Oasis is located in southeast Libya, in the middle of the Sahara and 1500 kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. This is a historic crossroads for routes across the desert and since the 1970’s it has been at the centre of an agricultural development project based on utilisation of the Sahara’s great fossil aquifer. The water table feeds a sophisticated model of highly automated, low-energy-consuming precision irrigation system. The fitness for use of the airport will further speed up the oasis’s development; today it is among the most remote places in Libya.
